At 3pm on April 15th 1945, Eugene Black was released from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp; “stateless, homeless, and an orphan in a land full of hatred”.
64 years later, the survivor of one of Nazi Germany’s worst execution camps tells that having a wonderful wife and a family has made him a “happy man” and grateful for life.
It is believed that almost 3 million people died at Auschwitz It is now a place of pilgrimage for people of all faiths to learn what happened. Jewish visitors come to pray where their ancestors suffered. Impromptu ceremonies are held in the gas chambers and on the railway lines leading to the camp.
